The Gruber Family
A family business in the Salzburg Lungau – rooted for generations.

Since 1430, the Gruber family has run the Gellnwirt – a house with over 600 years of history. Today the sixth generation is already writing the next chapter. This house has always been many things at once: inn, workplace, home and the centre of life. Here people cooked, rebuilt, argued, celebrated and carried on again. That is exactly what you can still feel today.

A place that connects the family across generations

Grandma & grandpa, mum & dad, children and grandchildren – there was always something going on at the Gellnwirt. Some cook. Others organise. Some tell stories, others keep things running. And somewhere there's usually someone sitting in the parlour. Perhaps that's exactly why the house doesn't feel like a hotel, but like a place where life is truly lived.

Our family and our home

The Gellnwirt is not just a business. It is the house in which our family lives. Between the kitchen, the market square and the parlour, work and home often blur into one. That is exactly what defines the Gellnwirt: here people don't just work – here they eat, debate, organise and live together. And that's probably exactly why the inn feels the way it does.

Martin & Verena – your hosts at the Gellnwirt

We are hosts because every inn needs its hosts – but really we are simply there: mostly wherever something is happening right now: in the kitchen, in service, in the office or somewhere between the parlour and everyday life. For us, the Gellnwirt is not simply work. It is the place our life revolves around – as a family, as a couple and as hosts.

Martin – chef and calm centre of the inn

Martin would rather be at the stove than in the spotlight. Calm, precise and uncompromising when it comes to flavour. Verena says: “Martin doesn't talk much about how something should be. He just does it.” Many things at the Gellnwirt work because Martin carries them consistently – day after day.

Verena – the heart & fire of the inn

Verena found her way into hospitality – and stayed. Today she tries to keep many balls in the air around the office, the children and the inn, and she blossoms in service, giving you nothing more gladly than her attention. Martin says: “No one likes people as honestly as Verena. She really sees you.”

Together – the Gellnwirt as a family house

The Gellnwirt doesn't work because of a perfect concept. It works because many people here pitch in together. Family, team, kitchen, parlour and everyday life mesh together. Sometimes chaotic, mostly lively – but always with the feeling that everything here belongs together.
