The Gellnwirt story – for centuries at the heart of inn life.

The walls of the Gellnwirt are in parts almost a thousand years old. The house was first documented as early as 1430 – and to this day people still cook, work, debate and sit together here.

We are deeply rooted

Martin grew up in this house. His father too. And his father before him. For generations the family has lived in the heart of the inn – between the kitchen, the parlour and the market square. That's exactly what leaves its mark. This house was never just a workplace, but always a home too. And you can probably feel exactly that to this day.

We are hosts and custodians

In its long history the house has been many things:

  • a trading point for iron, wine & salt
  • a farm
  • a meeting place on the market square
  • a home for generations

For over 135 years the Gellnwirt has belonged to the Gruber family. And every generation has left something behind: a new parlour, stories, recipes, pieces of furniture or simply the way an inn is lived here.

Great-grandfather Martin built the parlour bench and laid the floor. His son – today's grandfather Martin senior – furnished the parlour, filled it with stories and inn banter. Together with Karoline, who carries cooking in her heart and ran the house with heart for decades.

Karoline & Martin

Karoline and Martin, then in their early twenties – having just married, simply rebuilt the whole house. A lot of effort and a lot of thought. And then they just got to work. Alongside that, three children grew up in this inn. Two girls and a boy. Karoline is a cook, a mum and a landlady through and through. And Martin (senior) is with the guests. He has stories and inn jokes. He's a one-off. Both are now, besides being hosts, parents and seniors, grandparents too. The very best, truly.

The boy from back then later became a chef. One who learned the craft, gained experience in other establishments and took over the Gellnwirt in 2020. And then Verena joined. As a newcomer to hospitality and with a great deal of love for this calling. Since then, cooking, organising, thinking ahead and living the inn have all happened here together.

Today the family continues to grow – and with it the Gellnwirt. Not through grand staging. But step by step. Just as this house has always grown.

The Gourmet Inn

At the Gellnwirt, honest inn cuisine meets genuine moments of indulgence. Down-to-earth, curious and with a real feel for flavour – in a parlour where you like to stay seated.
